Phoenix never had time to prepare. It was to the point if he wondered if it was on purpose; some great cosmic joke of the universe. Everything was always last minute, clients always came searching for a lawyer just a day before their trial, frantic. And he accepted, in part because he felt an obligation to as an attorney and in part the need to pay his rent.
But this case reminded him of himself, in some small way. A college kid, accused of murder, by the name of Char A. Larke. According to the court record, his girlfriend died after falling several stories from the apartment complex where Char lived, and it might've been reported as a suicide had not the landlady apparently heard the couple arguing earlier and brought down suspicion upon the boy. Her voice and mannerisms were like that of a parrot, as she squawked her accusations.
Eventually, though, it came down to calling forth the defendant himself. "Yeah, it's true; we had a fight. I... I don't even remember what it was about-"
"Hold it," interrupted Phoenix, "are you sure you can't remember? Even the slightest-"
"I don't," said Char, a little too quickly.
Things only went downhill from there, like always. They ended up at the bottom, barely hanging on by a thread.
But Phoenix had an idea.
To an outsider, it was crazy, but it might just be his best shot. Or it could be what got his client the highest penalty.
"Maya," he said after court was adjourned for the day, "I know it's a lot to ask, but do you think you could... channel a spirit?"
Maya looked surprised by the question. "You're gonna ask the deceased about what happened, aren't you?"
"You don't have to if you don't want to."
"No, I'll try... just remember, she's probably a bit biased about her death, Nick. Or doesn't know what happened exactly."
But still.
